
You put a Windows PC to sleep and return to a black screen that will not wake normally. Keyboard, mouse, or power button input may appear to do nothing. This applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 desktops and laptops using Sleep, Hibernate, or Modern Standby.
Does This Affect You?
Wake problems usually come from the monitor not waking, wireless input not waking the PC, a graphics or chipset driver failing to resume, or power features such as Fast Startup and USB selective suspend.
Rule Out the Monitor and a Simple Hang
Confirm the PC is not simply slow to resume.
- Check fans, power lights, and drive activity. If they are active, the PC may be awake while the display is not.
- Press a key or move the mouse, then wait 30 to 60 seconds.
- On desktops, check the monitor input and cable.
- Try a wired keyboard and mouse if wireless devices do not wake the system reliably.
- If nothing returns after a minute or two, hold power for 5 to 10 seconds to force shutdown, then boot normally and continue with prevention steps.
Fix Power Settings That Interfere with Waking
Change the settings that commonly trigger wake failures.
- Open Power & battery or Power & sleep settings and temporarily disable sleep for a few days. If the issue stops, sleep is the trigger.
- Open Control Panel Power Options, choose what the power buttons do, and disable Turn on fast startup.
- In Device Manager, open the main network adapter Power Management tab and disable wake permission if you do not need Wake-on-LAN.
- Run powercfg /lastwake and powercfg /devicequery wake_armed in Command Prompt to see which devices wake the PC.
Update Graphics and Chipset Drivers
Resume-from-sleep bugs often live in display and chipset drivers.
- Check Windows Optional driver updates for graphics and chipset items.
- Install current NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel graphics drivers directly from the vendor when possible.
- Install chipset drivers from the motherboard or laptop manufacturer.
- Apply BIOS updates that specifically mention sleep, wake, or power management.
Driver updates may briefly blank the screen and can usually be rolled back. We provide no warranty; proceed at your own risk. Use powercfg /a to see whether the PC uses Modern Standby; if so, BIOS and driver updates matter more than older sleep-state tweaks. If all else fails, Hibernate or full shutdown is a practical workaround while waiting for a firmware fix.
