
An external SSD is only as fast as the slowest part of the chain: the drive, cable, USB port, hub, file system, heat, and the type of files being copied. Most slowdowns can be traced without replacing the drive.
These steps apply to portable SSDs such as Samsung T-series, SanDisk Extreme, Crucial X-series, and similar drives on Windows and Mac.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if transfers are far below the advertised speed or the drive slows dramatically during large copies.
Check Cable and USB Port
- Check the drive rated interface, such as USB 3.2 Gen 2 or similar.
- Plug directly into the computer instead of a hub or dock.
- Use the cable that came with the SSD when possible.
- Try a clearly labeled USB 3.x or USB-C port.
- Avoid old black USB 2.0 ports, which are far slower.
- On laptops, test both USB-A and USB-C ports if available.
Check File System and Transfer Type
- Check the file system in Windows Properties or Mac Get Info.
- Avoid FAT32 for large modern transfers because it has a 4 GB file limit and is not ideal for large files.
- Use exFAT for Windows and Mac compatibility or NTFS for Windows-focused use.
- Back up before reformatting because formatting erases the drive.
- Remember that thousands of small files copy much slower than one large file. Zipping small files first can help.
- Keep free space available; many SSDs slow down when they are around 85 to 90 percent full.
Benchmark the Drive
- Use CrystalDiskMark on Windows or Blackmagic Disk Speed Test on Mac.
- Compare sequential read and write numbers with the manufacturer spec.
- Being within about 10 to 20 percent of rated speed is normal.
- If it is half speed or worse, test another cable, port, and computer.
Other Causes
- Small fanless SSDs can thermal throttle during long sustained transfers. Letting the drive cool can restore speed.
- Check SSD health with CrystalDiskInfo on Windows or Disk Utility First Aid on Mac.
- A suspiciously cheap drive from an unfamiliar seller may be mislabeled or counterfeit.
- If speeds are far below spec on multiple computers and cables, use warranty or replace it.
