A monitor looks sharpest at its native resolution, the exact pixel grid built into the panel. If Windows chooses another resolution, the image can look blurry, stretched, oversized, or surrounded by black bars.
These steps apply to external monitors connected to Windows 10 or Windows 11 by HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C.

Use this if text looks fuzzy, the picture is stretched, or Windows keeps reverting to the wrong resolution after restart.
Set the Native Resolution
- Right-click the desktop and choose Display settings.
- If more than one monitor is connected, click the numbered box for the external monitor.
- Find Display resolution.
- Choose the option marked Recommended.
- If no option is marked Recommended, check the monitor manual for its native resolution.
- Click Keep changes when prompted.
Fix a Resolution That Keeps Resetting
- Try a newer, shorter, certified HDMI or DisplayPort cable. Old cables can cap resolution.
- Try another port on the PC, laptop, dock, or graphics card.
- Update the graphics driver from Device Manager or the GPU maker.
- Avoid adapters or docks temporarily and connect directly if possible.
- Open Advanced display and check that refresh rate is supported at the chosen resolution.
Graphics driver updates can briefly blank the screen. That is normal, and you can roll back from Device Manager if the new driver creates problems.
If the Resolution Is Correct but It Still Looks Wrong
- Check Display scale. Use 100 percent or Windows recommended scale for that monitor.
- If Windows only offers low resolutions, it may not be reading the monitor EDID correctly through a KVM, dock, or old adapter. Test direct connection.
- With mixed-resolution monitors, click each display number and confirm resolution separately after updates or restarts.
