Curved monitors bend the panel toward you so the edges sit closer to your eyes. The benefit is real on large and ultrawide screens, but it is not automatically worth paying for on every monitor size or use case.
This guide applies to desktop monitors for gaming, productivity, design, and general use, especially screens 27 inches and larger.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if two monitors have similar specs and you are deciding whether the curve is useful or just extra cost.
What the Curve Changes
- Edges can sit closer to the same viewing distance as the center, especially on ultrawides.
- A wide screen can feel easier to scan without turning your head as much.
- Curves matter much less below about 27 inches.
- Large flat panels can show more edge glare or off-axis distortion than a similar curved panel.
- Curve radius is shown as numbers like 1800R or 1000R. Smaller numbers mean a tighter curve.
Choose Flat If
- The monitor is 27 inches or smaller for general use.
- You do photo editing, video editing, CAD, or graphic design where straight lines should remain visually flat.
- You are building a multi-monitor setup where flat edges align more naturally.
- You want the best resolution or refresh rate for a tight budget.
Choose Curved If
- You are buying a 32-inch or larger screen.
- You are buying a 34-inch or wider ultrawide.
- You game or work with wide timelines and spreadsheets from a centered seat.
- You want a more immersive view and can sit at the intended distance.
Practical Notes
Tighter curves are designed for closer viewing. Sitting too far back can make a tight curve look strange. Curved monitors also sit farther from the wall and may need compatible VESA mounts. If you sit off to one side, the benefit drops because the curve expects a centered user.
