Dell Laptop Battery Not Charging? How to Fix It

Dell laptop plugged in not charging troubleshooting illustration

Dell laptops include their own battery, charger, BIOS, and power-management tools, so start there before replacing parts. Plugged in, not charging can be a setting, adapter wattage issue, Windows battery driver problem, BIOS bug, or failed battery.

These steps apply to Dell Inspiron, XPS, Latitude, Vostro, and similar Windows laptops.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if Windows says plugged in not charging, the battery percentage does not move, or the charging light stays off.

Run Dell Battery Diagnostics

  1. Open Dell SupportAssist from the Start menu, or install it from Dell support using your Service Tag.
  2. Run the hardware scan or battery health check.
  3. Review whether the battery is healthy, degraded, or failed.
  4. Check the AC adapter wattage printed on the charger against the wattage Dell lists for your model.
  5. Enter the Service Tag on Dell support to check for known battery, charger, BIOS, or model-specific issues.

Reset the Charging State in Windows

  1. Shut the laptop down.
  2. Unplug the AC adapter.
  3. Hold the power button for 15 to 20 seconds to drain residual power.
  4. Plug the adapter back in and turn the laptop on.
  5. If still not charging, open Device Manager > Batteries.
  6. Uninstall Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery.
  7. Restart so Windows reinstalls the driver.

Update BIOS and Check Dell Power Manager

  1. Use SupportAssist to check for BIOS and driver updates.
  2. Install BIOS updates only while plugged in and do not interrupt the process.
  3. Open Dell Power Manager or Dell Command Power Manager.
  4. Check Battery Charge Settings.
  5. If it is set to Primarily AC Use or a charge limit around 80 percent, switch to Adaptive or Standard if you want full charging.

Removable Battery and Replacement Notes

If your Dell has a user-removable battery, shut down, unplug, remove the battery, inspect the contacts, wait 30 seconds, and reseat it. If Dell diagnostics report battery failure, check warranty first. Out of warranty, use a genuine Dell replacement matched to the exact model because third-party packs can trigger compatibility charging errors.
