Samsung Notes is the built-in Galaxy note app for typed notes, handwriting, drawings, voice recordings, images, tables, and PDF markup. It can also sync through your Samsung account to other Galaxy devices and the Windows app.
These steps apply to Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets running One UI. Handwriting and S Pen features require compatible hardware.

Use this if you want to start using Samsung Notes, organize existing notes, lock private notes, mark up PDFs, or fix notes that are not syncing.
Create and Format a Note
- Open Samsung Notes.
- Tap the plus button to create a note.
- Type normally, or tap the pen tool for handwriting on supported devices.
- Use the toolbar to add lists, tables, images, drawings, or voice recordings.
- Leave the note or tap the checkmark when finished. Notes save automatically.
Sync Notes Across Devices
- Open Samsung Notes.
- Tap the three-line menu.
- Open Settings.
- Turn on Sync with Samsung Cloud.
- Sign in with your Samsung account if prompted.
- Repeat on your other Galaxy device or Samsung Notes for Windows using the same account.
- If notes are stale, pull down on the note list to refresh and check the internet connection.
Lock Private Notes
Open a note, tap the three-dot menu, and choose Lock. Use your phone PIN, password, pattern, fingerprint, or face unlock when prompted. Locked notes show a lock icon and hide preview text until unlocked.
Organize, Import, and Export
- Use the side menu to create folders such as Work, School, Recipes, or Personal.
- Move notes by opening the note menu and choosing Move.
- Use Import PDF or Insert file to annotate a PDF with text, highlighting, drawing, or S Pen input.
- Use Export to save a note as a PDF, image, text file, or share it directly to another app.
