Google Lens uses the camera or an existing photo to search visually. It can identify objects, translate signs, copy printed text, recognize products, and help explain many homework-style problems.
These steps apply to Android phones with the Google app or Google Photos installed. Some Lens results require an internet connection.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if you have seen the camera-style Lens icon but have not used it, or if you want to search something you can point the camera at instead of typing a description.
Search with the Camera
- Open the Google app or tap the Google search widget.
- Tap the camera icon in the search bar.
- Point the camera at the object, landmark, plant, product, animal, or text.
- Tap the shutter button if needed, or hold still while Lens analyzes.
- Review the results at the bottom and tap a result to learn more.
Use Lens on a Saved Photo
- Open Google Photos.
- Open the photo or screenshot.
- Tap the Lens icon below the image.
- Wait for Lens to highlight recognized text, objects, or products.
- Tap a highlighted area or the results panel to narrow the search.
Best Lens Uses
Translate Text
Open Lens, point at a menu, sign, or package, and choose Translate. Lens can overlay translated text on top of the original view.
Copy Real-World Text
Choose the Text mode, select printed or handwritten text, and tap Copy text. You can paste it into Notes, Messages, search, or another app.
Find Products
Use the Shopping tab when available to look for visually similar products and prices online.
Homework Help
Point Lens at a printed or handwritten problem and use the Homework tab if it appears. Lens can show explanations for many problem types.
