How to Use Gemini on a Samsung Galaxy Phone

Recent Samsung Galaxy phones can use Google Gemini as the digital assistant alongside or instead of Bixby. Setup means signing in, choosing Gemini as the default assistant, and deciding how you want to launch it.

These steps apply to Samsung Galaxy phones running One UI 6.1 and later where Gemini is available.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if Gemini is installed but does not open from assistant shortcuts, or if your Galaxy still opens Bixby when you expected Gemini.

Set Gemini as the Default Assistant

  1. Open the Gemini app, or install/update it from the Play Store if your phone supports it.
  2. Sign in with your Google Account.
  3. Accept the setup prompts.
  4. Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.
  5. Tap Digital assistant app.
  6. Choose Gemini and confirm.

After this, supported assistant shortcuts and Hey Google can open Gemini instead of another assistant, depending on your voice settings.

Launch Gemini with the Side Button

  1. Open Settings > Advanced features > Side button.
  2. Under Press and hold, choose Gemini if the option appears.
  3. If you prefer the power menu, leave Press and hold set to Power off menu and open Gemini from the app icon instead.

Use Gemini Features

  • Tap the waveform icon in Gemini to start Gemini Live, a real-time voice conversation mode.
  • Use Ask about this screen when available to let Gemini reference the current app or page.
  • Create a Home Screen shortcut if you do not want voice or button triggers.

Gemini and Bixby Notes

Bixby Routines Can Stay

Modes and Routines may still run Samsung automations even if Gemini is your default assistant. Many people use Gemini for questions and Bixby Routines for device automation.

Rollout Varies

If Gemini is missing from Digital assistant app choices, update the Gemini app, Google app, and system software. Some models and regions receive the feature later than others.
