A mobile hotspot turns your Android phone into a small router that shares mobile data with a laptop, tablet, or another phone. It can use Wi-Fi, USB tethering, or Bluetooth depending on the device and situation.
These steps apply to Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, and similar Android phones on carriers that support hotspot or tethering.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if you need internet for another device while traveling, during an outage, or away from normal Wi-Fi. Hotspot data uses your mobile plan, and some plans limit it separately.
Turn On Wi-Fi Hotspot
- Open Settings.
- On Samsung, tap Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.
- On Pixel and many others, tap Network & internet > Hotspot and tethering.
- Tap Mobile Hotspot or Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Set or review the network name and password.
- Turn the hotspot on.
- On the other device, open Wi-Fi settings and connect to the phone hotspot using the password.
Use USB Tethering
- Connect the Android phone to the laptop with a USB cable.
- Open Hotspot and tethering settings.
- Turn on USB tethering.
- Wait for the laptop to detect the wired network connection.
USB can be more stable than Wi-Fi hotspot and can charge the phone while sharing data.
Limit Access and Data Use
- Open Mobile Hotspot settings.
- Check Connected devices or Allowed devices.
- Remove or block devices you do not recognize.
- Set a hotspot data limit if your phone offers one.
- Keep the phone close to connected devices for a stronger signal.
Hotspot Troubleshooting
Carrier Plan Limits
Some prepaid, budget, or unlimited plans limit hotspot data or require an add-on. If the toggle will not stay on, check the carrier app or account.
Reconnect Devices
If a laptop cannot join, turn Wi-Fi off and on for that laptop, forget the hotspot network, and restart both devices.
Range Is Limited
Keep devices within about 15 to 20 feet where possible. Walls and bags weaken the signal.
Battery Saver Can Interfere
Aggressive power-saving modes may turn off hotspot after inactivity. Check Battery settings during long sessions.
