Screen timeout controls how long your Android phone keeps the display on after you stop touching it. It saves battery, but a timeout that is too short is annoying when reading, cooking from a recipe, or following instructions.
These steps apply to Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, and similar Android phones. Menu wording may say Screen timeout, Sleep, or Screen timeout after inactivity.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if the display turns off too quickly, stays on too long, or appears to ignore the timeout you selected. Other settings such as Battery Saver, lock delay, and app behavior can affect what you see.
Change the Timeout Duration
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap Screen timeout, Sleep, or a similar option.
- Choose a duration such as 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, or 30 minutes.
- Exit Settings. The change applies immediately.
Shorter timeouts save battery because the screen is one of the biggest power users. For many people, one or two minutes is a comfortable balance.
Fix Timeout That Ends Too Soon
- Check Settings > Battery > Battery Saver. Some phones shorten timeout while Battery Saver is active.
- Reopen Display settings and confirm the selected timeout is the one you intended.
- On Samsung, open Advanced features > Motions and gestures and enable Keep screen on while viewing if you want face detection to delay timeout.
- Review third-party battery or launcher apps for their own screen timeout controls.
Keep the Screen On for Special Situations
Samsung Keep Screen On While Viewing
Samsung can use the front camera to keep the display awake while you are looking at it, then time out normally when you look away.
Stay Awake While Charging
Developer Options includes Stay awake, which keeps the screen on while charging. It is useful for dashboards or testing, but not ideal for everyday use.
App Overrides
Video, navigation, reading, and recipe apps may intentionally keep the screen awake while they are in front. That is app behavior, not a broken timeout setting.
Lock Delay Is Separate
Screen timeout turns the display off. A lock screen setting can decide how long after that the PIN, pattern, or fingerprint lock is required.
