Android can reduce unwanted calls through built-in caller ID, spam filtering, unknown-caller silencing, individual number blocks, and carrier-level spam services. Combining several layers works better than blocking one number at a time.
These steps apply to Android phones using Google Phone or Samsung Phone, plus carrier spam tools where available.

Turn On Caller ID and Spam Protection
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap the three-dot menu or gear icon.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Caller ID & spam, Caller ID and spam protection, or similar.
- Turn on caller and spam ID.
- Turn on spam call filtering if offered.
- On Samsung, enable suspicious call and message protection if available.
This lets the phone label likely spam and, on supported phones, filter some calls before they ring.
Silence Unknown Callers
- Open Phone app settings.
- Find Spam and Call Screen, Caller ID & spam, or the Samsung equivalent.
- Turn on Silence unknown callers or the closest matching option.
- Check your call history and voicemail so legitimate missed calls are not forgotten.
This is aggressive. It can silence real first-time calls from doctors, delivery drivers, schools, repair shops, or employers.
Add More Layers
Block Individual Numbers
Open Recents in the Phone app, tap the number, and choose Block. Blocked numbers can be reviewed later in blocked-number settings.
Use Carrier Filtering
Major carriers offer spam filtering tools such as AT&T ActiveArmor, Verizon Call Filter, and T-Mobile Scam Shield. Carrier filtering can block calls before they fully reach the phone.
Report Scam Calls
Report fraud attempts to reportfraud.ftc.gov or unwanted-call complaints to fcc.gov/complaints. Reporting will not stop the next call instantly, but it helps enforcement patterns.
Watch for Spoofing
Scammers can fake caller ID so a call looks local or familiar. If a call claims to be a bank, carrier, or agency, hang up and call back using a number you find independently.
