Android microphone problems usually come from app permissions, a blocked microphone opening, a buggy app, or a system audio conflict. Testing the microphone in a second app quickly tells you whether the phone hardware works.
These steps apply to Android phones including Samsung Galaxy models running One UI, Google Pixel, Motorola, and similar devices.

Use this if callers cannot hear you, voice recordings are silent, voice typing picks up nothing, or one app cannot access the microphone.
Check Microphone Permissions
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Tap the app with the microphone problem, such as Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, Recorder, or a meeting app.
- Tap Permissions.
- Tap Microphone.
- Choose Allow or Ask every time.
- Test the app again.
To inspect all microphone access at once, open Settings > Privacy > Permission manager > Microphone and review every app listed there.
Test Whether It Is One App or the Phone
- Open Voice Recorder or Samsung Voice Recorder.
- Record a short clip of your voice.
- Play it back.
- If the recording is clear, update or reinstall the original app because the microphone hardware works.
- If the recording is silent or muffled, remove the case and inspect the microphone openings.
- Gently clean visible lint with a dry, soft brush. Do not poke into microphone holes.
Also test a normal call and speakerphone call. Many phones use more than one microphone, so different call modes can narrow down which mic is affected.
Rule Out Software Conflicts
- Restart the phone.
- Temporarily disable always-listening features such as Bixby Voice Wake-Up or Google Assistant voice activation.
- Boot into Safe Mode to test with downloaded apps disabled.
- If the mic works in Safe Mode, uninstall recently added apps until the conflict is gone.
- If the mic failed after a drop or water exposure and still fails everywhere, contact the phone maker or a repair provider.
