When the Android on-screen keyboard refuses to appear, freezes while typing, or enters the wrong letters, the cause is usually a stuck keyboard app or corrupted keyboard data. It is rarely a permanent hardware problem.
These steps apply to Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, and similar Android phones using Gboard, Samsung Keyboard, or another on-screen keyboard.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if tapping a text field does nothing, the keyboard appears but will not respond, or typing has become inaccurate. Start with restart and keyboard app storage before changing system-wide settings.
Restart the Phone
- Press and hold the Power or Side button.
- Tap Restart.
- After the phone starts again, open Messages, Search, Notes, or another app with a text field.
- Tap into the field and check whether the keyboard appears normally.
A restart clears a stuck keyboard process, which is the most common reason the keyboard suddenly disappears.
Clear Keyboard Cache and Data
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Tap See all apps if needed.
- Find Gboard, Samsung Keyboard, or your keyboard app.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache and test again.
- If it still fails, return to Storage and tap Clear data.
Clearing keyboard data can remove learned words, typing history, and personal dictionary items for that keyboard, but it does not delete your Google account or unrelated app data.
Make Sure the Keyboard Is Enabled and Default
- On Samsung, open Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default.
- On Pixel and many other phones, open Settings > System > Languages & input > On-screen keyboard.
- Make sure your keyboard is turned on.
- Open Default keyboard and select the keyboard you want to use.
- Test typing again in a normal app.
If It Still Does Not Work
Update the Keyboard
Open the Play Store and check for updates to Gboard, Samsung Keyboard, or your keyboard app. Keyboard bugs are often fixed with small app updates.
Try a Second Keyboard
Install another trusted keyboard from the Play Store and switch to it in keyboard settings. If the second keyboard works, the original keyboard app is the problem.
Free Storage
A nearly full phone can cause keyboard lag, freezing, and app trouble. Check Storage settings and remove unused apps or downloads if space is tight.
Reinstall If Possible
Some keyboard apps can be uninstalled and reinstalled from Play Store. Built-in keyboards may only allow updates or data clearing; in that case, clearing data is the closest reset.
