Data Saver is an Android setting that limits how apps use mobile data in the background and asks active apps to use less data where possible. It helps on limited plans, during travel, or when a hotspot connection is expensive.
These steps apply to Android 9 and later. Some phones call it Data Saver, while others use labels such as data usage optimization.

Use this if you want to reduce data use, or if an app stopped syncing, loading images, or sending notifications after Data Saver was enabled. One switch can affect many apps at once.
Turn On Data Saver
- Open Settings.
- Go to Network & internet > Data Saver. On Samsung, use Connections > Data usage > Data saver.
- Turn on Use Data Saver.
- Watch for the Data Saver icon in the status bar while it is active.
With Data Saver on, most apps cannot freely use mobile data in the background. Apps in the foreground may also reduce image quality, pause preloading, or sync less aggressively.
Allow Important Apps Unrestricted Data
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver.
- Tap Unrestricted data.
- Find the app that must keep working in the background.
- Turn its switch on.
- Repeat for messaging, email, navigation, or safety apps that need reliable background access.
Apps on the unrestricted list behave as if Data Saver were off, while the rest of the phone stays restricted.
Fix an App That Broke After Data Saver
- Add the affected app to the unrestricted data list.
- Test the app on Wi-Fi. If the same problem happens on Wi-Fi, Data Saver may not be the cause.
- For cloud photos, email, messaging, or navigation, keep Data Saver on generally but exempt only that app.
- Turn Data Saver off briefly to confirm the behavior changes immediately, then re-enable it with the right exception.
Extra Data Saver Notes
It Is Not a Hard Data Cap
Data Saver reduces use, but it does not stop the phone at a specific number. Set data warnings and limits separately under mobile data usage settings.
The Icon Is Expected
The small status icon is Android reminding you Data Saver is active. This is useful if you turned it on while traveling and forgot later.
Battery May Improve Slightly
Because apps do less background work over mobile data, battery life can improve a little, though saving battery is not the main purpose.
Metered Wi-Fi Can Count Too
On Android 9 and later, Wi-Fi marked as metered can receive Data Saver behavior. Check the network details if a hotspot or public Wi-Fi acts restricted.
