A black, unresponsive iPhone is not always dead. A frozen system or deeply drained battery can make the phone ignore normal button presses until it is force restarted or charged long enough to wake.
These steps apply to modern iPhone models, including iPhone 8 and later with the current Side button restart sequence.

Use this if the screen stays black, the Side button does nothing, and you see no Apple logo, vibration, or sound. Try force restart and charging before assuming repair is required.
Force Restart the iPhone
- Press and quickly release Volume Up.
- Press and quickly release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button.
- Keep holding for up to 20 to 30 seconds even if the screen stays black.
- Release when the Apple logo appears.
The iPhone SE 2nd and 3rd generation use this same sequence. Older iPhones may use Home plus Side or Top button instead.
Rule Out a Dead Battery
- Connect the iPhone with an Apple or certified cable and a reliable wall adapter.
- Use a wall outlet rather than a computer USB port.
- Let it charge undisturbed for at least 30 minutes.
- After 30 minutes, try the force restart again.
- If the phone becomes warm, it may be receiving power even before the screen appears.
- If it stays cold and unresponsive after an hour, test another cable, adapter, and outlet.
Try Recovery Mode with a Computer
- Open Finder on a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, or iTunes on Windows or an older Mac.
- Connect the iPhone to the computer.
- Press Volume Up, press Volume Down, then hold the Side button.
- Keep holding until the recovery mode screen appears.
- When Finder or iTunes offers options, choose Update first.
- Use Restore only if Update fails and you understand it erases the iPhone.
Update tries to reinstall iOS without deleting data. Restore is more drastic and should wait until the safer option fails.
When to Stop Troubleshooting
DFU Is More Advanced
Device Firmware Update mode can sometimes help when recovery mode cannot, but the timing varies by model and is easy to get wrong. Use Apple’s current instructions for the exact iPhone before attempting it.
Damage Changes the Risk
If the iPhone was dropped, got wet, or the screen or frame is separating, stop forcing charges and get a hardware inspection. A swollen battery or liquid damage needs professional handling.
Check Coverage
Use checkcoverage.apple.com from another device if you have the serial number from the box, receipt, or Apple account purchase history.
Book Service
If force restart, charging, cables, outlets, and recovery mode all fail, schedule Apple Support or authorized service rather than repeating the same steps.
