iPhone Won’t Connect to Wi-Fi: How to Fix It

Fixing iPhone Wi-Fi illustration

An iPhone can fail to join Wi-Fi, keep asking for the same password, or show Wi-Fi bars while nothing loads. Most cases are caused by a stuck saved network, a router that needs restarting, or a network setting that needs to be reset.

These steps apply to iPhones running recent iOS versions on home Wi-Fi, public Wi-Fi, school or work Wi-Fi, and hotspots.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if Safari, Mail, or apps spin forever on Wi-Fi, or the phone says it cannot join the network. Start with the router and saved network before changing deeper settings.

Restart Everything and Rejoin

  1. Open Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off.
  2. Wait 10 seconds, then turn Wi-Fi back on.
  3. Tap the info button next to your network and choose Forget This Network.
  4. Restart the iPhone.
  5. Unplug the router and modem from power, wait 30 seconds, then plug them back in.
  6. Wait about two minutes for the router to reconnect.
  7. Join the Wi-Fi network again and type the password carefully.

Check Date, Time, Updates, and Login Pages

  1. Open Settings > General > Date & Time.
  2. Turn on Set Automatically.
  3. Open Settings > General > Software Update and install available iOS updates.
  4. On hotel, airport, school, or public Wi-Fi, open Safari and try any webpage so a sign-in page can appear.
  5. Complete the network login if one is required.

A wrong clock can break secure network authentication. Public Wi-Fi can also look connected until its web login page is completed.

Reset Network Settings

  1. Open Settings > General.
  2. Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Choose Reset Network Settings.
  5. Enter the passcode and confirm.
  6. After restart, rejoin Wi-Fi with the password.

This removes saved Wi-Fi passwords, VPN settings, and cellular network settings, so use it after the simpler checks.

Deeper Wi-Fi Causes

Router Band Steering

If the router has separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names, try the 5 GHz name directly. Some routers with automatic band steering move iPhones poorly between bands.

Private Wi-Fi Address

Open the network info screen and turn off Private Wi-Fi Address for that network as a test if the router uses device lists, parental controls, or MAC filtering.

Check Other Devices

If no phone or laptop connects, the issue is the router or internet provider. If only the iPhone fails, continue iPhone-side troubleshooting.

Airplane Mode Refresh

Turning Airplane Mode on for 10 seconds and off again resets Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular radios together and can clear a stuck connection.
