Screen Time problems usually show up as limits that do not trigger, Downtime that does not block apps, or family settings that never sync to a child’s device. Most of the time the issue is a disabled toggle, sync problem, or stuck restriction.
These steps apply to iPhones running recent iOS versions, including iOS 17 and iOS 18, including devices managed through Family Sharing.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if an app stays open after its limit, Downtime does not start, or changes made from a parent device do not appear on the child’s iPhone.
Make Sure Screen Time Restrictions Are On
- Open Settings > Screen Time.
- If you see Turn On Screen Time, set it up again.
- If Screen Time is on, tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Make sure the main toggle is on.
- Open App Limits and confirm the limit is enabled and includes the correct apps or categories.
- Restart the iPhone after confirming settings.
Limits can be disabled during troubleshooting, updates, or app changes. Recheck the actual limit instead of only checking that Screen Time is generally on.
Fix Screen Time Sync for Family Devices
- On the parent iPhone, open Settings > Screen Time and confirm the child appears under Family.
- If the child is missing, add them in Settings > your name > Family.
- On the child’s iPhone, open Settings > Screen Time.
- Turn on Share Across Devices.
- Make sure both devices are online with Wi-Fi or cellular data.
- Wait a few minutes for changes to sync.
- If changes still do not appear, sign out of iCloud on the child device and sign back in, then check Screen Time again.
Family Screen Time changes do not apply instantly while a device is offline. Give the device a chance to sync before rebuilding every limit.
Reset Stuck Restrictions
- Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Turn the main toggle off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on.
- Enter the Screen Time passcode if asked.
- Remove and re-add the app or category limit that is not working.
- Open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically.
Screen Time schedules depend on the device clock. A wrong date or time zone can make Downtime and limits appear broken.
Important Screen Time Notes
Your Own Device Is Different
If you set Screen Time for yourself, anyone who knows the Screen Time passcode can remove or change the limits. There is no separate parent device enforcing them.
Built-In Apps Use Different Controls
Apps such as Phone, Messages, and Safari may be restricted from Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps, not only from App Limits.
Check After Major Updates
After a major iOS update, review Share Across Devices, Downtime, App Limits, and Content & Privacy Restrictions. Updates can expose settings that were already inconsistent.
