An iPhone update can fail before downloading, stop during verification, or appear stuck on the Apple logo progress bar. The usual causes are low free storage, unstable Wi-Fi, not enough battery or power, or an update process that needs to be restarted.
These steps apply to iPhones updating over Wi-Fi or through a computer on recent iOS versions.

Use this if you see Software Update Failed, Unable to Verify Update, a stalled download, or a progress bar that has not moved for a long time. Check storage and connection before forcing anything.
Free Up Storage and Check the Connection
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Check available space. iOS updates often need several gigabytes temporarily.
- Use Apple’s recommendations such as offloading unused apps or reviewing large attachments.
- Connect to stable Wi-Fi. Large updates may be blocked or limited over cellular.
- Plug the iPhone into power, especially if the battery is under 50 percent.
- Return to Settings > General > Software Update and try Download and Install or Install Now again.
Force Restart Only If the Install Is Truly Stuck
- Give the update time. Major iOS installs can take 20 to 30 minutes and the bar may pause.
- If the progress bar has not moved for 30 to 45 minutes, press and quickly release Volume Up.
- Press and quickly release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
- Let the iPhone restart fully.
- After it returns, check Software Update to see whether the install finished or needs to be started again.
A force restart usually does not erase data, but it should be used only after you are confident the install is not simply slow.
Update Through a Computer
- On a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, open Finder. On Windows or an older Mac, open iTunes and update it first.
- Connect the iPhone with a cable and unlock it.
- Tap Trust This Computer if asked.
- Select the iPhone in Finder or iTunes.
- Click Check for Update.
- Choose Update and keep the iPhone connected until it restarts.
Computer updating bypasses the iPhone’s over-the-air download path and is often the most reliable fallback for repeated wireless failures.
Other Update Problems
Beta Profiles
If the iPhone has a beta profile under Settings > General > VPN & Device Management, remove it if you are trying to return to public releases. Beta software can affect update availability.
Apple Server Load
Right after a major iOS release, Apple servers can be busy and verification can fail temporarily. Waiting a day and retrying may solve it without any other change.
Error Numbers
Specific errors such as 4013 or 9 need targeted Apple troubleshooting. Search the exact code on Apple Support rather than treating it as a generic download issue.
Back Up First
Before a major update, make a current iCloud backup or computer backup. A backup is the safety net if the update path goes wrong.
