How to Set Up Voicemail on iPhone

Setting up voicemail on iPhone illustration

Voicemail on iPhone usually works through Visual Voicemail, which lists messages in the Phone app instead of forcing you to dial in and listen one by one. If the setup button fails, the issue is often carrier-side rather than a broken iPhone setting.

These steps apply to iOS 17 or later on carriers that support Visual Voicemail.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if missed callers cannot leave messages, the Voicemail tab asks you to set up voicemail, or setup fails with an error.

Set Up Visual Voicemail

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Tap Voicemail.
  3. Tap Set Up Now.
  4. Create and confirm a voicemail passcode for dialing in directly.
  5. Choose a default greeting or record a custom greeting.
  6. Tap Save or Done.

After setup, unanswered calls can go to voicemail and appear as a list in the Voicemail tab.

Set Up Voicemail by Calling In

  1. Open Phone and tap Keypad.
  2. Touch and hold 1 to call your carrier voicemail system.
  3. Follow the voice prompts to create a passcode and record a greeting.
  4. Return to the Voicemail tab afterward. If your carrier supports Visual Voicemail, the list may populate after phone-based setup.
  5. If it still does not, your plan may require checking voicemail by holding 1.

Fix Voicemail Setup Errors

  1. Confirm the iPhone has cellular signal. Voicemail setup contacts your carrier and may fail over weak service.
  2. Restart the iPhone and try setup again.
  3. Open Settings > General > About and install any carrier settings update if prompted.
  4. Contact the carrier if setup still fails, because voicemail may need to be enabled or reset on the account.

Voicemail Notes

Change Greeting or Passcode

In Phone > Voicemail, tap Greeting to switch between default and custom greetings. Passcode changes often require dialing into the carrier voicemail system.

Transcripts

Supported carriers can show rough voicemail transcripts below messages. Listen to important messages because transcript accuracy varies.

Share a Voicemail

Tap a voicemail and use the share button to send the audio through Messages, Mail, or AirDrop.

Old Voicemail Suddenly Broke

If voicemail worked before and stopped after a SIM change, plan change, or account issue, contact the carrier first.
