How to Share a Wi-Fi Password from iPhone

Sharing Wi-Fi password from iPhone illustration

iPhone can share a saved Wi-Fi password to another nearby Apple device without either person seeing or typing the password. If the other person is on Android, Windows, or is not saved correctly in Contacts, you can reveal and copy the password manually instead.

Automatic Wi-Fi password sharing requires iOS 11 or later and works best when both people are signed into iCloud and saved in each other’s Contacts.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if someone nearby needs to join your Wi-Fi and you want a quick, secure handoff or a way to copy the password yourself.

Share Automatically with Another Apple Device

  1. Make sure both devices have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.
  2. Confirm both people are signed into iCloud and saved in each other’s Contacts using the Apple ID email or phone number.
  3. Have the other person open Settings > Wi-Fi and tap your network.
  4. Keep your unlocked iPhone nearby.
  5. When the share prompt appears, tap Share Password.
  6. Their device joins the network automatically.

Find and Copy the Password Manually

  1. Open Settings > Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap the info button next to the connected network.
  3. Tap Password.
  4. Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode.
  5. Tap the password to copy it, then paste it into a message, email, or note.

Troubleshooting Sharing

Contacts Must Match

The automatic prompt depends on Apple recognizing the nearby person through Contacts. Add the email or phone number tied to their Apple ID if the prompt never appears.

Keep Devices Close

Bluetooth must be on and the devices should be nearby. Airplane Mode or distance can prevent the prompt.

Android and Windows

Apple’s one-tap share flow is for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. For Android or Windows, copy the password manually or use a router-generated QR code.

Router QR Codes

Some routers can generate a Wi-Fi QR code that any modern phone can scan, which is handy for mixed-device households.
