iPhones normally save photos as HEIC because it keeps quality high while using less storage than JPG. The tradeoff is compatibility: some older devices, websites, and apps still reject HEIC files. You can change the camera format for future photos and convert existing photos when needed.
These steps apply to iOS 17 and iOS 18 using Camera, Photos, and Files.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if uploaded iPhone photos appear as .heic files or an app asks for JPG or JPEG instead.
Save Future Photos as JPG
- Open Settings.
- Tap Camera.
- Tap Formats.
- Choose Most Compatible instead of High Efficiency.
New photos will save as JPG, and videos will use the more compatible H.264 format. Existing HEIC photos are not changed. JPG files are usually larger, so storage and iCloud usage may increase.
Convert Existing HEIC Photos with Files
- Open Photos, select the HEIC image, tap Share, and choose Save to Files.
- Pick a location such as On My iPhone or iCloud Drive and tap Save.
- Open the Files app and go to that location.
- Touch and hold the file, then choose Convert Image.
- Select JPEG. A JPG copy appears beside the original HEIC file.

Quick Transfers
Mail and AirDrop to a Mac can automatically convert HEIC to JPG depending on transfer settings. AirDrop between Apple devices may keep HEIC because both sides support it.
Why HEIC Exists
HEIC is not an error. It is a storage-saving format that can keep similar visual quality while using much less space than JPG.
Convert Multiple Photos
Select multiple photos, save them to Files, and convert them there. For larger batches, the Shortcuts app can automate the Convert Image action.
