A MacBook that gives no charging response at all is different from one that says Not Charging. No light, no battery change, and no startup response usually points to the outlet, charger, cable, port, or charging hardware rather than a normal battery-health setting.
This guide applies to MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with built-in batteries.
Does This Affect You?
Use these steps if plugging in the MacBook produces no chime, light, battery icon change, or other response.
Check the Power Chain
- Test the same wall outlet with another device.
- If the charger has separate pieces, make sure the cable and adapter are fully connected.
- Inspect the cable and connector for fraying, bends, soft spots, or damaged MagSafe pins.
- Use a flashlight to inspect the Mac charging port for lint or debris. Clean gently with a dry soft brush only.
- Try a different compatible charger and cable if available.
- Try a different outlet and bypass power strips or surge protectors.
Reset Power Handling
Apple Silicon MacBook
- Hold the power button for about 10 seconds to force a full shutdown.
- Reconnect a known-working charger.
- Wait a minute.
- Press the power button briefly to start up.
Intel MacBook
- Shut down fully.
- Reset SMC with the correct key combination for your model, commonly Shift + Control + Option plus the power button for about 10 seconds on many built-in battery models.
- Release the keys and press power normally.
- Reconnect the charger and look for any response.
More Charging Notes
Completely Drained Battery
If the battery was fully empty, leave it on a confirmed-working charger for 15 to 20 minutes before expecting the screen to light up.
Swap-Test Hardware
Trying your charger on another compatible Mac and another charger on your Mac quickly separates charger failure from Mac charging-circuit failure.
Battery Failed Completely
If the Mac works only while plugged in and dies immediately when unplugged, the battery itself may have failed.
Liquid Damage
If the Mac was exposed to liquid or humidity, let it dry in a ventilated place for at least 48 hours and avoid powering it on. Charging failure may be logic board or port damage.
Service Needed
If a known-working outlet, charger, and reset produce no response, book Apple or authorized service for the port, battery, or logic board.
