macOS Recovery is where you reinstall macOS, run Disk Utility, reset some passwords, and access repair tools. If it does not appear, the most common reason is using the Intel shortcut on an Apple Silicon Mac, or pressing keys at the wrong time.
This guide applies to Apple Silicon and Intel Macs on recent macOS versions.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if your Mac boots normally instead of entering Recovery, never shows startup options, or cannot load the macOS Utilities screen.
Use the Correct Method for Your Mac
- Open Apple menu > About This Mac to check the chip.
- For Apple Silicon, shut down completely. Press and hold the power button until Loading startup options appears. Choose Options, then Continue.
- For Intel, shut down, press the power button, then immediately hold Command + R until an Apple logo, spinning globe, or Recovery screen appears.
- Release the keys when Recovery loads.
Fix Startup Issues Blocking Recovery
- Shut down fully instead of using Restart.
- Disconnect non-essential USB devices, external drives, docks, and hubs.
- Try the correct startup method again.
- On Apple Silicon, hold the power button longer if the Mac starts normally too quickly.
- On Intel, try Option + Command + R for Internet Recovery if local Recovery is damaged.
- For laptops, connect power and make sure the battery is not critically low.
Special Recovery Situations
Internet Recovery
Intel Macs can use Option + Command + R to download Recovery over the internet. Apple Silicon can fall back through the power-button startup options when needed. A stable network is required.
Managed Macs
Work or school Macs may restrict Recovery access with management policies. Contact the organization’s IT team if this applies.
Firmware Password
Older Macs with a firmware password may block startup options until the password is entered. If you do not know it, Apple Support may require proof of purchase.
Hardware Diagnostics
If Recovery will not load after the correct methods, there may be a startup disk, SSD controller, or firmware issue that needs Apple diagnostics.
