Mac password rules depend on which password you are setting. A local login password, Apple Account password, managed-device password, FileVault recovery key, and Screen Time passcode all follow different requirements.
This guide applies to personal Macs and Macs managed by schools or employers.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if macOS rejects a password, warns that it is weak, or seems to allow a password simpler than you expected.
Local Mac Login Password
- A standard local macOS account does not enforce a strict minimum length or complexity by default.
- System Settings may warn that a password is weak, but personal Macs often still allow it.
- If FileVault is enabled, the login password also protects disk encryption, so a weak password weakens that protection.
- A practical recommendation is at least 12 characters with letters, numbers, and a symbol, even when macOS does not force it.
Apple Account Password
- Apple requires at least 8 characters.
- It must include at least one uppercase letter.
- It must include at least one lowercase letter.
- It must include at least one number.
- It cannot use three identical characters in a row, the Apple Account email address, or recently used Apple Account passwords.
- These rules are enforced by Apple’s servers whether you change the password from Mac, iPhone, iPad, or the web.
Other Password Situations
Managed Macs
A school or employer can use mobile device management to require length, complexity, password changes, or password history rules. If a Mac suddenly rejects simple passwords, check with IT.
FileVault Recovery Key
When you use a local FileVault recovery key, macOS generates it. You do not choose its length or complexity, but you must store it safely.
Screen Time Passcode
The Screen Time passcode is separate from both the Mac login password and Apple Account password. It is commonly a simple four-digit code.
Security Recommendation
Even when macOS accepts a short password, use a longer unique password or passphrase, especially on laptops and FileVault-protected Macs.
