How to Rotate a PDF on Mac

Mac Preview rotate PDF illustration

Sideways PDF pages usually come from scans, phone photos, or documents exported with the wrong orientation. The built-in Preview app can rotate a single page or a whole PDF, then save the corrected file.

These steps apply to recent macOS versions, including Ventura, Sonoma, and Sequoia.

Does This Affect You?

Use this when one page is upside down, a scanned packet has mixed orientations, or the whole PDF opens landscape when it should be portrait.

Rotate One Page in Preview

  1. Open the PDF in Preview. If it opens elsewhere, right-click the file and choose Open With > Preview.
  2. Choose View > Thumbnails so each page appears in the sidebar.
  3. Click only the page thumbnail that needs rotation.
  4. Choose Tools > Rotate Left or Rotate Right. You can also use Command + L or Command + R.
  5. Repeat the rotation if the page needs to turn 180 degrees.
  6. Press Command + S to save, or use File > Export to create a separate corrected copy.

Rotate Every Page in the PDF

  1. Open the file in Preview and show thumbnails.
  2. Click inside the thumbnail sidebar.
  3. Press Command + A to select all pages.
  4. Use Tools > Rotate Left or Rotate Right.
  5. Review the thumbnails so no page was turned the wrong way.
  6. Save with Command + S or export a new copy.

PDF Rotation Notes

Save Before Closing

If you rotate a page and close Preview without saving or exporting, the file may reopen in its old orientation. Save deliberately before you quit.

Rotate for Printing Only

If the document itself should stay unchanged, open File > Print and adjust the print orientation instead of rotating pages in Preview.

Mixed Page Directions Are Fine

A scanned document can contain portrait and landscape pages in the same PDF. Rotate only the pages that are actually wrong.

If the Rotation Reverts

Cloud drives and shared locations can occasionally reopen an older unsaved version. Rotate again and use File > Export as PDF to make a confirmed new file.
