On a Mac, the Windows-style right-click menu is called secondary click. It opens the same kind of context menu for files, folders, links, text, and app controls, but Apple trackpads and Magic Mouse devices may need the option enabled first.
This guide applies to MacBook trackpads, Magic Trackpad, Magic Mouse, and ordinary two-button USB or wireless mice.
Does This Affect You?
Use these steps if clicking with one finger only selects an item and does not show menu choices such as Copy, Rename, Get Info, Open With, or Move to Trash.
Turn On Secondary Click for Trackpad or Magic Mouse
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Trackpad, or choose Mouse if you are using a Magic Mouse.
- Open the Point & Click section.
- Enable Secondary click.
- Choose the gesture you prefer, such as clicking or tapping with two fingers, clicking the bottom-right corner, or clicking the bottom-left corner.
- Test it on the desktop or on a file. A shortcut menu should appear.
Right-Click with a Standard Two-Button Mouse
- Connect or pair the mouse normally.
- Open System Settings > Mouse.
- Confirm the right button is assigned as the secondary button.
- Try right-clicking a file in Finder.
- If it still does not work, reconnect the mouse, try another USB port, re-pair Bluetooth, or check the manufacturer for a driver or utility.
Other Right-Click Options and Fixes
Use Control-Click Anywhere
Hold Control and click with one finger. macOS treats that as a secondary click even if the trackpad gesture is turned off.
Make Two-Finger Click More Reliable
If the gesture works only sometimes, turn on Tap to Click in Trackpad settings or switch the secondary-click action to a bottom corner. That can feel steadier for some users.
Check for Gesture Conflicts
If another gesture opens instead, review System Settings > Trackpad > More Gestures and change any overlapping finger-count actions.
MacBook Trackpads Already Support It
Every modern MacBook trackpad can secondary-click. No extra software or hardware is required once the setting is enabled.
