Voice Memos is built into macOS and records through the Mac microphone or a connected external mic. It is useful for quick notes, interviews, lectures, meetings, and ideas.
This guide applies to Macs running macOS Mojave or later.

Use Voice Memos when you need a simple audio recording app that saves automatically and can sync recordings to iPhone and iPad through iCloud.
Record a Voice Memo
- Open Voice Memos from Spotlight or Launchpad.
- Click the red record button.
- Speak normally and watch the waveform to confirm sound is being captured.
- Use Pause if you need to stop briefly without ending the memo.
- Click Stop to finish. The recording saves automatically.
- Click the recording name and rename it so you can find it later.
Trim and Clean Up a Recording
- Select the recording.
- Click the more button and choose Edit Recording.
- Use the trim/scissors control and drag the yellow handles to remove unwanted beginning or ending audio.
- Use Enhance Recording to reduce background noise or echo.
- Save when finished.
Voice Memos Tips
iCloud Sync
If Voice Memos is enabled in iCloud on your Apple devices, recordings appear across Mac, iPhone, and iPad after they finish syncing.
Use Folders
Create folders for interviews, lectures, ideas, or meetings so a long recording list stays manageable.
Share Recordings
Select a memo and use the Share button to send it by Mail, Messages, AirDrop, or save/export it as an audio file.
Enhance Is Reversible
Enhance Recording can be toggled for comparison, so you can decide whether the cleaned version sounds better.
