The Mac menu bar contains Apple system items and third-party app icons, and the two groups are managed differently. System icons live in Control Center settings, while many app icons can be Command-dragged directly.
This guide applies to recent macOS versions such as Sonoma and Sequoia.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if your menu bar is crowded, icons are in the wrong order, or useful system icons such as Sound, Battery, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth are missing.
Show, Hide, and Reorder Apple System Icons
- Open System Settings > Control Center.
- Review modules such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Sound, Battery, Display, Focus, and Now Playing.
- Use each dropdown to show it in the menu bar, hide it, or show it only when active when that option exists.
- Scroll lower for items such as Spotlight and Battery Percentage.
- Changes apply immediately.
Rearrange or Remove Third-Party Icons
- Hold the Command key.
- Drag an app’s menu bar icon left or right to reposition it.
- To remove an icon, keep Command held and drag it down off the menu bar if the app allows it.
- If the icon disappears but the app keeps running, reopen the app or check its settings to show it again.
Menu Bar Space Tips
Overflow Is Normal
When there is not enough room, macOS hides icons toward the left side near app menus first. Remove or hide icons you do not need daily.
Some Icons Are Fixed
The Apple menu, Control Center, and some system or app icons cannot be moved or removed from the bar directly.
Optional Organizer Apps
Apps such as Bartender or Hidden Bar can tuck rarely used icons behind a collapsible area. They are optional; built-in Command-drag covers basic organization.
MacBook Notch Behavior
On MacBooks with a camera notch, icons may seem to vanish when space is tight. That is menu bar overflow, not necessarily a bug.
