Windows Hello lets you sign in with a PIN, fingerprint, or face scan instead of typing your full password. A PIN works on any PC; face and fingerprint require compatible hardware.
This applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Does This Affect You?
Windows Hello is usually faster and safer for daily sign-in because the PIN and biometric data stay tied to the device rather than working everywhere like a password.
Set Up a Windows Hello PIN
- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Choose PIN (Windows Hello).
- Click Set up.
- Verify your account password if asked.
- Enter and confirm the PIN. Use more than four digits or letters/symbols if desired.
- Click OK.
Set Up Face Recognition
- Open Sign-in options.
- Choose Facial recognition (Windows Hello). If it is missing, the camera likely does not support Windows Hello IR recognition.
- Click Set up, then Get started.
- Confirm with your PIN or password.
- Look at the camera while Windows scans your face.
- Use Improve recognition later for glasses or different lighting.
Set Up Fingerprint Sign-In
- Open Sign-in options.
- Choose Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello).
- Click Set up and confirm with your PIN or password.
- Touch the sensor repeatedly as instructed.
- Add another finger if you want a backup.
Windows Hello Settings to Check
Require Sign-In After Sleep
Set Windows to require sign-in when the PC wakes from sleep so closing the lid or stepping away does not leave it unlocked.
Remove a Method
Open Sign-in options, expand PIN, face, or fingerprint, and choose Remove. Windows may require at least one sign-in method to remain.
Add Compatible Hardware
External Windows Hello cameras and USB fingerprint readers exist. Check for explicit Windows Hello compatibility before buying.
PIN vs Password
A PIN is stored locally and works only on that device. A Microsoft account password can be used from anywhere, which makes the PIN safer for routine sign-in.
