How to Fix Windows Update Error 0xc1900101

Windows feature update 0xc1900101 illustration

Error 0xc1900101 almost always appears during a large Windows feature update or version upgrade. It usually points to a driver or hardware conflict that forces Windows to roll back.

This applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 feature updates, not ordinary monthly patches.

Does This Affect You?

Windows usually returns to the previous version safely after this error. To complete the upgrade, remove the driver or hardware conflict that blocked setup.

Update Drivers and Disconnect Hardware

  1. Open Device Manager and look for yellow warning icons.
  2. Update graphics, network, storage, and chipset drivers first.
  3. For important devices, download drivers from the PC, motherboard, GPU, or device maker rather than relying only on Windows Update.
  4. Disconnect external drives, USB hubs, printers, secondary displays, capture cards, and unusual peripherals.
  5. Restart and try the feature update again.

Free Disk Space and Run the Troubleshooter

  1. Check free space on the system drive. Feature updates may need 20 GB or more temporarily.
  2. Open Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files and remove safe cleanup categories.
  3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter from Settings > System > Troubleshoot.
  4. Restart and try again.

Use the Update or Installation Assistant

  1. Download the Windows 10 Update Assistant or Windows 11 Installation Assistant from Microsoft’s official site.
  2. Run the tool and follow the prompts.
  3. Complete driver and hardware cleanup first, because the assistant does not magically fix an incompatible driver.

Read Rollback Logs

After rollback, check C:WindowsPanthersetupact.log and setuperr.log. Search near the end for “error” to identify a driver or file.

Remove Recent Hardware

If the problem started after adding a device, remove it during the upgrade and reconnect it afterward.

It Is Safe to Wait

If the current Windows version still works, you can pause. A later cumulative update may include a compatibility fix.

Uninstall Third-Party Antivirus Temporarily

Some security suites interfere with feature upgrades. Temporarily uninstalling, then reinstalling after the update, can help.
