How to Format a Laptop and Clean Install Windows

Windows laptop clean install illustration

Formatting a laptop usually means wiping the internal drive and installing Windows fresh from USB media. It is more thorough than Reset this PC and also more destructive if you have not backed up files.

This applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 laptops. You need an 8 GB or larger USB drive and another working computer to prepare it.

Does This Affect You?

Use a clean install before selling a laptop, after stubborn malware, when Reset this PC fails, or when you want a completely fresh Windows installation. Back up first because deleting partitions removes everything on the laptop drive.

Create Installation Media and Install

  1. Back up documents, photos, downloads, browser bookmarks, and anything stored only on the laptop.
  2. On another PC, download Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  3. Insert an 8 GB or larger USB drive. It will be erased.
  4. Run the tool and choose Create installation media for another PC.
  5. Select the USB drive and let the tool create the bootable installer.
  6. Move the USB to the laptop, restart, and open the boot menu with the manufacturer key, often F12, F10, Esc, or Del.
  7. Boot from the USB and choose language and keyboard settings.
  8. Click Install now. Enter a key or choose I don’t have a product key if the laptop already has a digital license.
  9. Choose Custom: Install Windows only.
  10. Delete partitions on the internal laptop drive until only unallocated space remains, then click Next.
  11. Let Setup create partitions and install Windows. The laptop will restart several times.
  12. Complete the first-run Windows setup screens.

After the Clean Install

Install Drivers

Windows includes many generic drivers, but laptop touchpad, Wi-Fi, graphics, chipset, and function-key features often work best with drivers from the laptop maker’s support page.

Activation Should Return

If Windows was activated before, it normally reactivates automatically when online. Use Activation troubleshooter if needed.

Consider Reset Instead

If the laptop still boots and you do not need a full wipe, Reset this PC is simpler and does not require USB media.

Reuse the USB Drive

When finished, use Disk Management to delete the installer partition and create a new NTFS or exFAT volume if you want the USB back for storage.
