
A lagging wireless mouse is not dead; it moves, but the pointer skips, pauses, or stutters. That pattern usually points to interference, a receiver that is too far away or blocked, a weak battery, USB power saving, or a surface problem.

Use these steps if the cursor jumps, freezes briefly, trails behind your hand, or behaves worse on one PC than another.
Fix receiver placement and interference
For mice with USB receiver dongles, placement is the most common cause.
- Check where the receiver is plugged in. Rear desktop ports, ports behind monitors, and hubs can put too much distance or metal between the receiver and mouse.
- Move the receiver to a front port or use a short USB extension cable to bring it onto the desk.
- Avoid placing a 2.4GHz receiver next to busy USB 3.0 ports or external drives, which can create radio interference. Try a USB 2.0 port if available.
- Move routers, phone chargers, hubs, and other wireless devices away from the mouse and receiver.
- Spread out cables and avoid hiding the receiver behind a metal stand, case, or desk frame.
Rule out a low battery
Weak batteries can still move the pointer, just unreliably.
- Check battery percentage in the mouse manufacturer app if one is available.
- Replace disposable batteries or fully charge the mouse as a test.
- If lag disappears after charging or replacing batteries, note the battery life and charge earlier next time.
Adjust Windows power management
Windows can power down USB hubs or Bluetooth radios to save energy, which may appear as stutter.
- Open Device Manager.
- Under Universal Serial Bus controllers, open each USB Root Hub and clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power under Power Management.
- For Bluetooth mice, do the same under the Bluetooth adapter properties if that tab exists.
- Restart the PC and test again.
- On a laptop, temporarily switch Power mode to Best performance to see whether battery saving is involved.
Still stuttering?
Try a lower polling rate
Some gaming mice report at 1000Hz or higher. If the software allows it, lower the report rate to 500Hz as a test, especially when using hubs or older ports.
Test the mousing surface
Glass, glossy desks, and busy patterns can confuse optical sensors and look like wireless lag. Test on a plain matte mousepad.
Update mouse and chipset drivers
Install the latest mouse software or firmware from the mouse maker, and update chipset drivers from the laptop or motherboard support page if USB devices stutter in general.
Test another computer
If the lag follows the mouse, suspect the mouse or battery. If it works smoothly elsewhere, focus on the original PC Bluetooth, USB ports, drivers, or interference.
