Wireless charging depends on close alignment between the charging coil in the phone and the coil inside the pad or stand. If the phone is a few millimeters off, a case blocks the signal, or the charger is underpowered, nothing may happen and you may not see a useful error.
Does this affect you?
Use this guide if your phone does not show a charging icon on a wireless pad, starts then stops charging, charges only in one position, or works by cable but not wirelessly.
Alignment and quick checks
Most wireless charging failures come from simple placement or obstruction problems.
- Remove thick cases, wallet cases, card holders, PopSocket-style grips, and anything with metal or magnetic pieces. Thin cases are often fine, but thicker accessories can block charging.
- Place the phone carefully on the pad and move it slightly in each direction. The coil is not always in the exact center of the phone back.
- Remove credit cards, RFID cards, keys, coins, and metal objects between the phone and charger. They can interfere and may be damaged.
- Watch for the charging sound, vibration, or icon. If charging begins and then pauses, heat or power is more likely than alignment.
- Try the phone in several positions on the pad, especially if the charger is a flat pad instead of a magnetic stand.
Power and cable checks
Wireless chargers need enough input power before they can charge a phone reliably.
- Use the adapter that came with the charger or one that meets its wattage requirement. Many fast pads need 18W or higher USB-C Power Delivery.
- Try a different USB cable. A worn or low-rated cable can stop enough power from reaching the pad.
- Plug the charger into a wall adapter instead of a computer USB port, hub, or low-power dock.
- Unplug and firmly reconnect the cable at the pad or stand input.
- Expect wireless charging to be slower than wired charging. Slow charging is normal if it is steady and the phone is not overheating.
Still not working?
Heat can pause wireless charging
Phones slow or stop wireless charging when they become too warm. Remove thick cases, keep the phone out of direct sunlight, and let it cool before testing again.
MagSafe and Qi2 need magnetic alignment
MagSafe iPhones and Qi2 pads should snap into place magnetically. If they do not, the phone or case may not support the standard, or the case may be too thick for the magnets to align.
Test with another phone
If a second compatible phone also fails on the same pad, the wireless charger is probably the problem. Try another charger or check the pad warranty.
