Windows Update Stuck Checking for Updates? How to Fix It

Windows Update stuck checking illustration

When Windows Update spins on “Checking for updates” without downloading or failing, the update service, cache, network path, or management policy is usually stuck. It is normally fixable without reinstalling Windows.

This guide applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 when checking for updates appears to run indefinitely.

Does This Affect You?

Use this when the update check spins for a long time and never finds, downloads, or reports an error. If an update is already installing with a percentage, use stuck-upgrading guidance instead.

Wait, Then Restart the Windows Update Service

  1. Let the check run for at least 10 to 15 minutes, especially after a long time without updates or on a slow connection.
  2. If it still spins, open Services from the Start menu.
  3. Find Windows Update.
  4. Right-click it and choose Stop.
  5. Wait about 10 seconds, then right-click it and choose Start.
  6. Return to Windows Update and click Check for updates again.

Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

  1. Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. On Windows 10, use Update & Security troubleshooters.
  2. Run Windows Update.
  3. Apply any fixes it suggests.
  4. Restart and check again.

Clear the Update Cache

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Run net stop wuauserv, net stop bits, and net stop cryptSvc.
  3. Run ren C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old.
  4. Run net start wuauserv, net start bits, and net start cryptSvc.
  5. Restart and try Windows Update again.

Other Causes to Rule Out

Metered Connections

If the network is marked metered, Windows may delay update activity. Open the network settings and turn off Metered connection if your data plan allows it.

VPN or Proxy Filtering

Disconnect VPNs and proxies temporarily if they block Microsoft update servers or filter traffic.

Work or School Management

Managed PCs may wait on company update servers. If Group Policy manages updates, contact IT instead of forcing local resets repeatedly.

Microsoft-Side Issues

Occasionally the delay is outside your PC. Check Microsoft status pages or current reports before spending too much time on local repair.
