Windows Search can stop opening, stop accepting typing, or return no results when Explorer, the Windows Search service, or the search index stalls. Most fixes do not require reinstalling Windows.
This guide applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 taskbar search boxes and search-icon layouts.
Does This Affect You?
Use these steps if clicking the search icon does nothing, the search panel opens blank, typing does not work, or results never appear.
Restart Windows Explorer
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find Windows Explorer.
- Right-click it and choose Restart.
- Wait for the taskbar to reload, then try search again.
- If the panel opens but results are still missing, continue with the search service.
Restart Windows Search
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Search.
- Right-click it and choose Restart. If Restart is greyed out, stop it, wait a few seconds, then start it again.
- Close Services and test the search box.
Rebuild the Search Index
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows. On Windows 10, use Search > Searching Windows.
- Open Advanced search indexing settings.
- Click Advanced.
- On the Index Settings tab, click Rebuild.
- Confirm. Results may be incomplete while Windows rebuilds the index in the background.

Run the Troubleshooter
Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run Search and Indexing.
Check Whether Indexing Is Paused
Battery saver, low disk space, or power conditions can pause indexing. The Searching Windows page shows current indexing status.
Restart the PC
A full restart clears stuck search components that survive service restarts. It is basic, but often effective for lingering search glitches.
Use PowerShell Only for App Repair
On Windows 11, Search is tied to system app packages. Re-registering packages with PowerShell can help, but use that only after Explorer, service, index, and troubleshooter steps.
