Why Is Wi-Fi Slower Than Ethernet? What Is Normal and What Is Not

Ethernet usually beats Wi-Fi because it uses a dedicated cable while Wi-Fi shares radio space with other devices, walls, and nearby networks. A gap is normal; a huge gap is what needs troubleshooting.

Does this affect you?

Use this if a wired speed test is much faster than a Wi-Fi speed test on the same internet connection. The goal is to decide whether you are seeing normal wireless overhead or a fixable Wi-Fi problem.

Understand what gap is normal

Test carefully before changing settings.

  1. Run both tests on the same device if possible, once on Ethernet and once on Wi-Fi.
  2. Test back to back with no major downloads, backups, or streams running.
  3. Stand in the same room as the router for the Wi-Fi test.
  4. Expect Wi-Fi to be somewhat slower than Ethernet. A 10 to 30 percent gap near the router is usually normal.
  5. If Wi-Fi is far below wired speed everywhere in the house, keep troubleshooting.

Close the gap with band, channel, and placement

Most recoverable speed comes from the wireless side.

  • Use 5 GHz instead of 2.4 GHz when the device is close enough. 5 GHz is faster and usually less crowded.
  • Move the router to a central open spot, away from closets, cabinets, floors, metal, and thick walls.
  • Use a Wi-Fi analyzer to find crowded channels, then choose a clearer channel.
  • On 2.4 GHz, use channels 1, 6, or 11.
  • If the router is old, confirm it supports Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6. Wi-Fi 4 hardware has a much lower ceiling.

Rule out something broken

A very large gap may come from a device or router fault.

  • If wired speed is also far below the plan, the issue is upstream of Wi-Fi.
  • Test a newer phone or laptop beside the router. An old Wi-Fi card may be the slow piece.
  • Restart the router if it has been running for weeks.
  • If Ethernet is full speed but every Wi-Fi device is slow, focus on router radio settings, channel interference, or router hardware.

More control

Router box speeds are theoretical

Labels such as AX3000 combine multiple bands and ideal lab conditions. One device will not see that number in a normal speed test. Real-world Wi-Fi near the router may be 40 to 60 percent of the advertised combined figure.

Use cable for stability-critical devices

Gaming PCs, work desktops, and 4K streaming boxes often benefit more from one Ethernet run than from endless Wi-Fi tuning. Even a long cable along a baseboard can remove delay and drops.
