When Netflix suddenly will not load, the first question is whether Netflix is actually down or whether your device, app, account, Wi-Fi, or router is the problem. The answer changes what is worth trying.
These steps apply to Netflix on smart TVs, streaming sticks, phones, tablets, computers, and web browsers.
Does this affect you?
Use this if Netflix is stuck on a spinner, shows a blank screen, displays an error, or fails while other people in your home are trying to watch.
Check whether it is a real outage
- On your phone, turn off Wi-Fi and use cellular data.
- Open a browser and check a third-party outage tracker for Netflix report spikes.
- Search social platforms for Netflix down and look for many recent matching reports.
- Try Netflix on a different device using a different network.
- If Netflix fails everywhere, including cellular data, a Netflix-side outage is more likely.
- If Netflix works on cellular or another device, the issue is local to your network, app, or device.
Large Netflix outages are usually resolved by Netflix. In that case, restarting your TV repeatedly will not help much beyond waiting.
Rule out your own internet
- Open another video service such as YouTube on the same device.
- If other services also fail, restart your modem and router.
- Unplug both from power for 30 seconds.
- Plug the modem in first and wait for it to reconnect.
- Plug the router in and wait for Wi-Fi to return.
- Check Wi-Fi signal strength on the problem device.
- Test Ethernet if your streaming device supports it.
If a wired connection works but Wi-Fi does not, the Netflix problem is really a Wi-Fi strength or interference problem.
Read the error code
Netflix error codes can tell you whether the issue is local or widespread. Codes beginning with NW, such as NW-2-5, usually mean the app cannot reach the internet and point to Wi-Fi, router, DNS, or connection trouble.
Errors tied to a title, account, or browser page, such as NSES-style errors, are usually local to that title, account, or device rather than a global outage.
During a real broad outage, Netflix often fails the same way on many devices and networks at once, sometimes without a useful code.
What to do next
If outage reports are high, wait and try again later. If reports are normal, restart the app, restart the device, check internet, update Netflix, or reinstall the app on the problem device.
