F8 E4 on a Whirlpool dishwasher is an overflow or leak warning. It usually means the base pan under the tub has water in it, so the dishwasher enters flood-protection mode and may run the drain pump continuously.
These steps apply to Whirlpool dishwashers with electronic displays or blinking-light codes, plus some KitchenAid models built on the same platform.

F8 E4 is not normally a water-supply error. A float switch in the drip tray has detected water where it should not be. The usual causes are too many suds, a small hose or door leak, an overfill event, or a float switch that is stuck or faulty.
Turn off power at the breaker before reaching into the tub, base area, or kickplate area. Turn off the water valve under the sink before checking supply lines. Scoop out standing tub water first because it may be warm and you need a dry area to work safely.
Clear the base pan and reset flood mode
- Cancel the cycle and let the drain pump finish if it is removing water.
- Turn off power and water.
- Soak up standing water in the tub.
- With a helper, tilt the dishwasher back slightly so water trapped in the hidden base pan can move forward.
- Mop up any water and let the pan dry.
- Restore power and water, then run a short cycle.
Rule out excessive suds
Wrong soap is one of the most common F8 E4 triggers.
- Use only automatic dishwasher detergent.
- Never use hand dish soap, laundry detergent, or hand soap in the dishwasher.
- If the wrong soap was used, run one or two rinse-only cycles with no detergent.
- Use less detergent in soft-water homes.
- Watch the next normal cycle for foam returning.
Look for an actual leak
- With power off, remove the lower kickplate and look for dampness around the inlet valve, drain hose, circulation pump, and sump area.
- Inspect the full door gasket for cracks, food debris, or loose sections.
- Check that the dishwasher is level so water does not pool against the door.
- Tighten only accessible loose hose clamps and replace cracked hoses or seals.
If the pan is dry, detergent is correct, and no leak is visible, the float switch may be stuck or misreporting water. A technician can test the float circuit and check for slow internal leaks in the tub, sump, or pump.
