
WPA3 is the current Wi-Fi security standard for password-protected networks. It improves on WPA2, especially against password-guessing attacks, but older devices may still need WPA2 compatibility.
Does this affect you?
Use this if your router security menu offers WPA3, WPA2/WPA3 Mixed Mode, WPA3 Personal Transition, or WPA3 Only. For most homes, mixed mode is the easiest upgrade because newer devices use WPA3 while older devices can still connect with WPA2.
Check for and turn on WPA3
Change this from a device already connected to the router, and expect a brief Wi-Fi reconnect.
- Log into the router admin page or app. Common browser addresses are 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1.
- Open Wireless Settings, Wi-Fi Settings, or Security Mode.
- Look for Security Type or Authentication.
- Choose WPA2/WPA3 Mixed Mode or WPA3 Personal Transition if available.
- Use WPA3 Only only if every phone, laptop, printer, TV, smart device, and console supports WPA3.
- Save the change and let devices reconnect.
What WPA3 improves
The biggest home benefit is better protection when someone tries to guess the Wi-Fi password offline.
- WPA3 makes password-guessing attacks harder than WPA2.
- It is a worthwhile low-effort upgrade on routers and devices made in the last several years.
- Enhanced Open is related Wi-Fi Alliance technology for open password-free networks, but it is separate from WPA3 Personal on your home Wi-Fi.
- A strong, unique Wi-Fi password still matters. WPA3 does not make a weak password a good idea.
More control
Mixed mode avoids locking out older devices
Older smart plugs, printers, streaming sticks, and budget gadgets often support only WPA2. Mixed mode exists so you can improve security for newer gear without breaking the rest of the home.
WPA2 with AES is still reasonable
If one important device cannot connect with WPA3 or mixed mode, WPA2 Personal with AES and a strong password remains acceptable for most home networks. Avoid obsolete WEP or WPA/TKIP settings.
If one device stops connecting
Update that device firmware if possible, forget and rejoin the Wi-Fi network, or return the router to WPA2/WPA3 mixed or WPA2 Personal if the device cannot handle WPA3.
