HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. It lets compatible video carry a wider range between bright highlights and dark shadows, along with richer color information, so a capable TV can show more detail at both ends of the picture.
This applies to modern TVs that list HDR support and streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, and others that offer HDR content.

What HDR changes
- SDR, or Standard Dynamic Range, uses an older, narrower brightness and color range.
- HDR video can preserve bright highlights such as sunlight, fire, reflections, and neon while keeping shadow detail visible.
- HDR is not the same as 4K. A video can be 4K without HDR, and HDR is a picture range feature rather than a pixel-count feature.
- HDR10 is the common baseline format supported by nearly every HDR TV.
- HDR10+ and Dolby Vision add more advanced brightness instructions scene by scene or frame by frame.
Samsung TVs generally support HDR10+ instead of Dolby Vision. LG, Sony, and several other brands commonly support Dolby Vision. Base HDR10 remains the shared fallback.
Confirm HDR is actually working
- Check the TV specifications or About This TV screen for HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, or HDR support.
- Play a title marked HDR or Dolby Vision in a streaming app.
- Watch for an on-screen HDR or Dolby Vision notification when playback starts.
- Use a Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K HDR sources.
- Enable the enhanced HDMI mode for that port if your TV requires it.
Some TVs call the HDMI setting HDMI UHD Color, Enhanced Format, Input Signal Plus, or Deep Color. Without it, a connected box or console may not pass HDR correctly.
Why HDR may look dim or strange
Budget TVs can accept HDR signals without getting bright enough to show a dramatic improvement. That is why some spec sheets say HDR compatible while the real-world HDR effect is modest.
HDR also looks better in a dim room. Bright sunlight and screen glare reduce the contrast that makes HDR impressive.
If HDR looks oversaturated, blown out, or unnatural, switch from Vivid or Dynamic picture mode to Movie, Cinema, or Filmmaker Mode. Those modes usually track HDR content more accurately.
