What Are Browser Trackers? How Sites Follow You Around the Web

A browser tracker is code or data on a web page that records information about your visit and reports it to a company, often one other than the site you intentionally opened. Trackers are commonly used for advertising, analytics, and cross-site behavior profiles.

Use this explanation for desktop and mobile browsers. Trackers work similarly across devices, though each browser blocks or limits them differently.

How a tracker actually follows you

Most tracking is invisible and loads as part of an otherwise normal page.

  • Third-party cookies: An advertising or analytics company stores a cookie through code embedded on many websites. Because that same company appears across those sites, it can recognize the same browser repeatedly.
  • Tracking pixels: A tiny invisible image loads from a tracking server. Loading the image tells that server the page was opened, even if you did not click anything.
  • Fingerprinting: The site builds an identifier from browser details such as screen size, installed fonts, language, extensions, graphics behavior, and settings. It can work even when cookies are blocked.
  • Session replay scripts: Some sites record scrolling, clicks, mouse movement, and typed interactions for analytics. This can be useful to site owners but sensitive if forms are not masked properly.

What is already working in the background

Modern browsers include different tracker protections.

  • Safari: Intelligent Tracking Prevention limits known tracking domains and reduces their ability to follow you across sites.
  • Firefox: Enhanced Tracking Protection blocks known social trackers, cross-site cookies, fingerprinting scripts, and other categories. The shield icon shows what was blocked on a page.
  • Chrome: Chrome offers third-party cookie controls under Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies. It has historically relied more on settings and site controls than Safari or Firefox default blocking.
  • Extensions: Privacy and tracker-blocking extensions can add regularly updated blocklists on top of built-in browser protections.

More control

Fingerprinting is harder to clear

Clearing cookies does not erase a fingerprint because fingerprinting does not need to store a file on your device. Browser makers reduce fingerprinting by limiting details sites can read and by making devices look more similar.

Not all analytics are ad tracking

Many websites use analytics to count visitors, see which pages are popular, and diagnose site problems. That is still privacy-relevant, but it is different from cross-site advertising profiles.

Tracker blocking is an ongoing arms race

Tracking companies adjust techniques as browsers tighten protections, and browser makers update detection in response. That is why tracker lists and privacy protections need regular updates.
