A harsh grinding sound from a washer usually means something is rubbing, jammed, or wearing mechanically. It often appears during spin because the drum is moving fastest then.
These steps apply to most top-load and front-load washers from Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Maytag, Frigidaire, Speed Queen, and similar brands.

Grinding can be caused by a small object caught between the basket and tub, debris in the pump, a worn belt, loose motor mount, rubbing pulley, or failing tub bearings. Start with the accessible object checks.
Unplug the washer before reaching into the drum, pump filter, tub area, or any access panel. Let water cool before opening a pump filter, and never reach into the drum while it is moving.
Check for a trapped object
- Stop the cycle and unplug the washer.
- Spin the drum by hand and listen for scraping.
- Check the pump filter access area on front-load models for coins, buttons, underwire, or small debris.
- On top-load models, inspect around the agitator base and under the basket rim.
- Clear anything you find and test spin again.
Check the drive belt, pulley, and motor mount
Some washers use a belt-driven motor, especially many top-load models.
- Unplug the washer and move it carefully.
- Remove the rear access panel only if your model allows safe access.
- Inspect the belt for fraying, glazing, looseness, or slipping.
- Check motor mount bolts for looseness.
- On front-load models, inspect the rear pulley for rubbing or wobble.
Check the tub bearings
Deep grinding that gets louder with spin speed can point to worn bearings.
- With the washer unplugged, grip the drum or basket and rock it gently.
- Noticeable play, clunking, or gritty movement suggests bearing wear.
- Front-load bearing repair often requires major tub disassembly.
- Some top-load models use a sealed tub or bearing assembly.
If grinding is paired with water underneath the washer, stop using it. A failed bearing seal can let water reach parts that should stay dry.
Call a technician if trapped-object and belt checks do not solve it or the drum has play. On washers older than seven or eight years, ask for a repair-versus-replace estimate.
