
A VPN will almost always trim some speed because your traffic is encrypted and routed through an extra server. The goal is to make that slowdown small enough that normal browsing, calls, and streaming still feel smooth.
Does this affect you?
Use this if internet became clearly slower after enabling a VPN app on Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android, or after setting up a VPN directly on your router. A modest drop is normal; losing half your connection usually means the server, protocol, provider load, or local Wi-Fi needs attention.
Switch server and protocol
These two settings create most VPN speed problems, so start here.
- Open the VPN app and note the server location. A faraway server adds distance and delay, so choose the nearest server that still does what you need.
- Open the app connection settings and look for Protocol. If WireGuard is available, try it first because it is usually faster than older options such as OpenVPN or L2TP/IPsec.
- If the app offers Auto, Fastest, or Recommended server selection, test it. Providers often know which servers are under lighter load.
- Run a speed test with VPN on, then disconnect VPN and run the same test again. Compare the difference instead of judging by one number.
If switching server and protocol brings the VPN close to your regular speed, you have found the main issue. If the connection is still badly reduced, build a cleaner baseline.
Rule out your home network
A weak Wi-Fi link can make normal VPN overhead look much worse.
- Stand near the router and run a speed test with the VPN off to capture the real baseline.
- Turn the VPN back on, connect to the same server you just tested, and run the same test again.
- If possible, repeat the test over Ethernet. A wired test separates VPN slowdown from Wi-Fi interference, walls, and distance.
- Restart the modem and router if they have been running for weeks or the whole network feels unstable.
- If the VPN runs on the router itself, remember that many home routers have weak processors. Router-level VPN is often slower than using the VPN app on one laptop or phone.
More control
Use split tunneling when available
Many VPN apps include split tunneling under settings. Route only the apps that need privacy or work access through the VPN, while streaming, downloads, and general browsing use the normal connection at full speed.
Know what slowdown is reasonable
A well-tuned VPN on a nearby server often costs roughly 10 to 25 percent of your normal speed. Drops beyond 40 to 50 percent usually point to a distant server, an older protocol, a busy VPN provider, or a router that cannot encrypt fast enough.
Router VPN protects more devices but costs speed
Putting VPN on the router covers TVs, consoles, and smart devices automatically. The tradeoff is that every device shares one tunnel, and the router may process encryption far slower than a computer.
