Venmo requires a zero balance and no pending payments before account closure. Clear money movement first, then close the account from settings.
Does this affect you?
Use this for personal Venmo accounts on iPhone or Android. Venmo Business Profiles and Venmo Credit Card accounts may require separate handling.
Transfer your balance, then delete the account
Venmo will not close an account with unresolved money attached.
- Open Venmo and check the balance.
- If money remains, use Transfer to Bank.
- Check Transactions for pending payments or requests and wait for them to resolve.
- If you have a Venmo Credit Card, close that credit account separately first.
- Open the Me tab and tap the Settings gear.
- Choose Account under Preferences.
- Select Close Venmo Account.
- Confirm the closure and complete any identity or password check.
- Watch for Venmo’s closure confirmation email.
More control
Settle owed money first
If you owe Venmo money from a reversed payment or other issue, pay it before attempting closure. Venmo will not close an account with an outstanding balance.
Save records
Transaction history may not remain accessible after deletion. Export, screenshot, or save needed records before closing the account.
Remove payment methods if unsure
If you are not ready to close permanently, unlink bank accounts and cards, stop using Venmo, and keep the account inactive instead.
