Personal Hotspot shares your iPhone cellular data connection with a laptop, tablet, or another phone. It can connect over Wi-Fi, USB, or Bluetooth, and it is built into iOS without a separate hotspot app.
Personal Hotspot requires an iPhone with an active cellular plan that includes hotspot use. Many carriers include it, but some plans block it or sell it as an add-on.
Does This Affect You?
Use this when you need internet for another device and do not want to rely on public Wi-Fi. Remember that the connected device uses your phone plan data, and computers can use a lot of data quickly through updates, cloud sync, video, and downloads.
Turn On Personal Hotspot and Connect Over Wi-Fi
- Open Settings.
- Tap Personal Hotspot. If you do not see it, your carrier plan may not include hotspot access.
- Turn on Allow Others to Join.
- Look at the Wi-Fi password shown on the screen. Tap it if you want to change it.
- On the laptop, tablet, or other phone, open Wi-Fi settings.
- Choose the network named after your iPhone.
- Enter the hotspot password and connect.
While devices are connected, your iPhone shows a hotspot indicator and may show how many devices are using the connection.
Connect by USB or Bluetooth
- For USB, connect the iPhone to the computer with a compatible cable. Tap Trust on the iPhone if asked, and keep Personal Hotspot enabled. The computer should see the iPhone as a wired network connection.
- For Bluetooth, pair the other device with the iPhone from Bluetooth settings first. After pairing, choose the iPhone as the internet connection on the other device. The exact menu depends on the computer or tablet.
- Use USB when you want the most stable connection and want the iPhone to charge at the same time. Use Bluetooth when Wi-Fi is not ideal and speed is less important.
Wi-Fi, USB, and Bluetooth all draw from the same cellular data allowance. The difference is connection type, battery use, and stability, not a separate data plan.
Control Data, Battery, and Family Access
Watch Cellular Data
Open Settings > Cellular and review cellular data usage for the current period. A laptop can burn through a plan much faster than normal iPhone browsing.
Use Family Sharing Carefully
If Settings > Personal Hotspot > Family Sharing is enabled, members of your Family Sharing group may connect without typing the password. You can choose whether they need approval first.
Expect More Battery Drain
Personal Hotspot uses more power than normal iPhone use, especially with Wi-Fi and multiple devices connected. Plug the iPhone into power during long sessions, or use USB so it charges while sharing internet.
Carrier Limits Still Apply
Even when the switch appears in Settings, your carrier can throttle, cap, or restrict hotspot data according to the plan. Check the carrier account page if speeds suddenly drop.
