A TV that shuts off during a show is often following a setting rather than failing. Sleep timers, energy-saving features, no-signal auto-off, HDMI-CEC commands, unstable power, and heat can all make a TV power down by itself.
These steps apply to LED, LCD, OLED, and QLED TVs from any brand, including smart TVs and TVs connected to cable boxes, streaming devices, receivers, or soundbars.

Use this if the TV turns off in the middle of viewing, then either turns back on when you press power or stays off until restarted.
Turn off the sleep timer
- Press Home or Menu on the remote.
- Open Settings.
- Look for Sleep Timer under General, Timers, System, or the main settings menu.
- Set Sleep Timer to Off.
- Check the remote for a dedicated Sleep button that may have been pressed accidentally.
If the TV shuts off after roughly the same amount of time each session, a sleep timer is the most likely cause.
Disable energy saving and no-signal shutoff
- Open Settings > General or Settings > Picture, depending on the brand.
- Look for Eco Solution, Energy Saving, Power Saving Mode, Auto Power Off, or No Signal Power Off.
- Turn these off temporarily, or set them to the longest available duration.
- Disable Motion Lighting or Ambient Light Detection if the TV dims or shuts down in unusual lighting.
- If you use HDMI-CEC with a soundbar or receiver, check whether power control is linked between devices.
These features save energy, but they can misread paused video, dark scenes, quiet inputs, or external-device standby as a reason to turn the TV off.
Check power and outlet stability
- Plug the TV directly into a wall outlet instead of a power strip or surge protector.
- Make sure the power cable is fully seated in the back of the TV.
- Try another outlet, preferably on a different circuit.
- Watch whether bumps to the entertainment stand trigger shutoffs.
- Feel the back of the TV near the power area after it has run for a while.
Random shutoffs point more toward power or heat than a timer. Unusual heat in one area can mean an internal component is cutting out under load.
Update software, test CEC, and improve airflow
Install any pending TV update. Samsung, LG, Vizio, and other brands have patched unexpected shutoff behavior through firmware on some models.
Disable HDMI-CEC temporarily to test connected devices. Brand names include Anynet+ on Samsung, SimpLink on LG, and Bravia Sync on Sony. A streaming stick, receiver, cable box, or soundbar can accidentally send an off command.
If the TV sits in a closed cabinet or against a wall with blocked vents, give it more airflow around the back and top. Some TVs shut down to protect internal parts when they overheat.
