Chrome website notifications can become noisy fast, especially when a site was allowed by accident. You can revoke permission from specific sites or stop all websites from asking for notification access in the future.
Does this affect you?
Use this for Chrome on Windows, Mac, and Chromebook when websites are sending desktop alerts or repeatedly showing permission prompts. A site can send notifications because someone using that Chrome profile clicked Allow at some point.
Turn off notifications for one specific site
This is best when only one or two websites are causing trouble.
- Open Chrome Settings.
- Go to Privacy and security > Site settings > Notifications.
- Under Allowed to send notifications, find the site that is sending alerts.
- Click the three-dot menu beside the site and choose Block, or open the site entry and change Notifications to Don’t allow.
- Close Settings. Chrome applies the permission change immediately.
Block the notification popup from appearing at all
This prevents websites from asking for notification permission.
- Open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Notifications.
- Under Default behavior, choose Don’t allow sites to send notifications.
- Review any sites already in the allowed list and remove or block entries you no longer want.
After this, websites cannot show the standard Chrome notification permission popup unless you later allow a site manually.
More control
Clean up old allowed sites
The allowed list often contains sites approved months or years ago. Remove anything you do not recognize, no longer use, or did not mean to approve.
Chrome for Android has a similar control
On Android, open Chrome Settings > Notifications > Site notifications. Turn individual sites off, or disable Ask before sending to stop new sites from requesting notification permission.
Chrome system notifications are separate
These settings control website alerts. Chrome’s own notifications, such as update reminders or browser messages, may still be controlled by Windows Settings > System > Notifications or macOS System Settings > Notifications.
