Field Scenario
A customer asks specifically how to reset a particular setting, but the underlying context suggests they’re actually trying to solve a different, broader problem.
What You Actually Do
- Ask clarifying questions to understand the genuine underlying goal, not just the literal stated request
- Do this respectfully, without implying the customer’s framing was wrong
- Confirm your understanding of the actual need before proposing a solution
- Address the genuine underlying problem, not just the narrow literal request, if that better serves the customer
