If the Windows taskbar vanishes, it is usually hidden, stuck behind a full-screen app, shown on another monitor, or affected by a crashed Explorer process. The fix is often quick once you know which case you have.
This guide applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 desktops and laptops, including external monitor setups.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if the Start button, pinned apps, clock, and system tray are missing from the edge of the screen. If the taskbar is visible but does not respond, use the taskbar-not-working steps instead.
Turn Off Auto-Hide
- Move the mouse to the very bottom edge of the screen and pause. If the taskbar slides in, auto-hide is enabled.
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar once it appears, or open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Go to Personalization > Taskbar.
- Open Taskbar behaviors.
- Turn off Automatically hide the taskbar.
Restart Windows Explorer
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find Windows Explorer.
- Right-click it and choose Restart.
- The screen may flicker while the desktop reloads. The taskbar should return.
- If Explorer is not running, click File > Run new task, type
explorer.exe, and press Enter.
Check Monitors and Full-Screen Apps
- If you recently unplugged a monitor, reconnect it temporarily and see whether the taskbar is on that display.
- Open taskbar settings and check multi-monitor taskbar behavior.
- Press Alt + Tab or the Windows key to leave a full-screen game or video app.
- Move the mouse to every screen edge if the taskbar position was changed.
If the Taskbar Keeps Disappearing
Update the Graphics Driver
Display-driver glitches can make the taskbar or other screen elements vanish. Check Optional updates or download the current driver from Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD.
Test Another User Profile
Create a new local account and sign in. If the taskbar behaves normally there, the original profile likely has a corrupted setting.
Run System File Checker
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run sfc /scannow to repair damaged Windows files that can affect Explorer and the taskbar.
