Fix free space and permissions
Most disk write errors are software-level problems rather than immediate drive failure.
- Check free space on the drive where the game is installed.
- Free several gigabytes more than the game or update says it needs.
- On Windows, right-click the Steam library folder and open Properties > Security.
- Confirm your user account has Full control.
- Temporarily disable third-party antivirus or firewall software for a test.
- Run Steam as administrator for one launch.
- Check that the drive or folder is not marked read-only.
Steam needs temporary working space during installs and updates. Having exactly the final game size free may still be too little.
Check for a failing drive or corrupted download cache
If space and permissions are fine, clear temporary Steam data and check the storage device.
- In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Click Clear Download Cache.
- Sign back into Steam after it restarts.
- On Windows, right-click the drive in File Explorer, choose Properties > Tools > Check, and scan for file system errors.
- Try installing the same game to another Steam library folder on a different drive.
- Avoid external or network drives during troubleshooting.
- Check drive health with the manufacturer’s tool or a utility such as CrystalDiskInfo.
If the game installs correctly on another drive, the original drive, cable, port, or file system is likely involved.
When to replace the drive
A one-time Steam cache issue is not a reason to replace storage. Repeated write errors across many games, failed drive scans, health warnings, or errors outside Steam are more serious.
Back up important files before continuing to use a drive that reports health warnings or bad sectors.
